This test standard for measuring glazed tile abrasion resistance employs the PEI method. This method uses a device which subjects the tiles to the action of a highly abrasive compound. This compound consists of steel spheres in different diameters, corundum powder and distilled water. The speed of the abrasive compound on the sample tested is 300 revolutions per minute. At the end of the test, the abrased sample is compared to an identical sample which has not undergone the test. The sample tested according to the number of revolutions of the abrasive environment will be comprised in one of the five different classes:
| |
Tiles for zones frequented by extremely intense traffic and/or high presence of abrasive dirt. |
| Tiles for zones frequented by intense traffic and/or presence of abrasive dirt. | |
| Tiles for zones subjected to
rather intense traffic, walked on with normal footwear, and with small quantities of abrasive dirt. |
|
| Tiles for floors on which people
walk mainly with soft or normal footwear, with only very small quantities of abrasive dirt. |
|
| Tiles for floors on which people
walk mainly with bare feet or soft footwear without abrasive dirt. |
